QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY
For Quinnipiac’s Burt Kahn Court, Pearl Street’s custom engineered solution included the replacement of the existing light fixtures with new high output LED models.
Although the lumen output of the fixtures is much higher than the previous, they are much more efficient (less power draw) and eliminated the need to upgrade the lighting wiring systems. Light levels were increased by over 300% and the new lighting system now achieves the NCAA volleyball standards for light levels while exceeding the standards for both uniformity and glare.
The solution also included the installation of a lighting control system that has multiple preset lighting scenes for various activities. For example, for competitive volleyball play, the light fixtures over the court were set to achieve the required levels and the fixtures over the bleachers are dimmed to provide more pleasing light levels for the spectators. Lighting scenes specific to lectures and dances (which did not exist prior to this project) were developed. The controls also address the slow but eventual degradation of light output of LED fixtures with a lumen management capability that will maintain light levels over the system life. Lastly, the control system utilizes a matrix of occupancy sensors and time schedules that dim (or shut off) the lighting when there is nobody using the gym, saving energy, increasing the utility incentive amount and also extending the life of the LED fixtures.
With respect to energy savings, the new system consumes an impressive 69% less energy than the previous system, saving considerable dollars and reducing the university’s Carbon footprint.
The new lighting system received a utility incentive equal to 40% of the project cost. The project will generate operating cost savings of nearly $20,000 annually and deliver an economic payback in approximately 2 years.
“The finished product looks 1000% better than before; Pearl Street was able to meet lighting levels over and above what is necessary for our NCAA Division I Volleyball program. The lighting presets were not something we anticipated in this project, but provide us tremendous flexibility for a highly utilized space.” (Bill Mecca, Senior Associate Athletic Director)
